Step-by-Step Gowning Procedure
1. Pre-Entry Personal Preparation
Before entering the gowning area:
Shower if required, or at least wash your hands thoroughly
Remove all personal items such as jewelry, watches, and phones
Avoid cosmetics and skincare products
2. Entry into the Gowning Room
The gowning room, sometimes called an airlock or ante room, is the buffer space between the outside world and the cleanroom itself. It exists so that outside air never directly reaches the clean space, and so that you have a controlled place to change.
The room is laid out for unidirectional flow, meaning you move in one direction only, from the dirty side to the clean side. Once you have started gowning, you do not backtrack toward the entrance. If you need to go back, you start over.

What You Can't Wear into a Cleanroom

Hair spray, gel, or wax, which can flake off or become airborne
Lotion or makeup, since even powder-free formulations introduce particulates
Deodorant sticks or sprays, unless the formulation is approved and residue-free
3. Clothing Restrictions
Lint-producing fabrics such as wool, fleece, or denim
Garments with loose fibers or frayed edges
Open-toed shoes or sandals
Under your cleanroom garment, wear clean cotton or polyester clothing that won't shed lint.
Tips for Cleanroom Success

Don't touch your face or exposed skin once you've gloved up.
